ESOPHAGUS, STOMACH, AND DUODENUM
Case #7 - A 42 year old woman presents with dysphagia |
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: |
7.) What management may be recommended to this patient?
|
Management should relieve the obstruction and decrease the lower esophageal sphincter pressure. Although partial and short-term relief can be obtained with drugs or Botulinum toxin injections, long-term relief is obtained by balloon dilatation or by surgery. The surgical procedure is a myotomy, disrupting muscle fibers in the distal esophagus.
