UW mentors are welcomed partners of Northshore Community Schools. Whether you are joining the partnership as a Community Based Learning student or as a student-life volunteer, your involvement with Northshore Community Schools enriches the community and promotes lifelong learning for you, youth and their families. In addition to the help available to you at your college campus, support from a variety of professionals within the school and community are ready to assist you in your classroom mentoring role.

Volunteer opportunities within Northshore Community Schools include mentoring middle school youth. As a mentor, you will provide positive support and model constructive social and academic behaviors. College mentors should expect to grow in their ability to be: good listeners, care about and develop skills in positive behavioral support, and assist young people to bring out strengths that already exist but may not be practiced.

Work Description: Classroom Mentors support the learning environment in a classroom and small group or 1:1 settings to improve students’ confidence to independently complete classwork. Mentors may identify strengths and barriers youth bring to the academic setting, assist youth with problem solving and developing positive communication skills and/or coping behaviors. Teachers and mentors will work together to support students’ academic skills and confidence. Classroom mentors do not necessarily need to be subject experts. Classroom mentors have an interest in helping youth discover success.

Classroom Mentors will:

  • Choose from math and/or ELA classes (volunteers can specify at orientation)
  • Support the learning process in a classroom setting (1:1 support, small group may occur)
  • Be an active presence in the classroom – checking on classroom work, encourage productive behaviors, assist students in using available resources/tools, etc.
  • Make a positive difference in youth
  • Develop positive means to interact with students/re-direct students to productive classroom habits
  • Build meaningful relationships with youth and teaching staff
  • Follow directions of the teaching staff and support students in completing classroom work
  • Provide 1:1 tutoring with students who may have a second language or other barriers to learning
  • Identify strengths and barriers students bring to the academic setting and share observations with teacher staff
  • Encourage youth to be active in school, afterschool, family and community events
  • Consider attending mentoring support sessions available
  • Document progress and concerns to school staff or as requested
  • Be a positive role-model and contribute to the success of students!

Impact: College and community mentors support the learning environment in classroom and small group settings during and after-school. Teachers and mentors work together to improve students’ academic skills, sense of belonging, and confidence.

College Mentors will support the middle school youth by:

  • Encouraging students to stay motivated and focused on education;
  • Providing tutoring and study skills strategies that compliment personal strengths; Improving attitudes toward parents, peers and adults;
  • Specifying positive and productive ways to spend free time;
  • Helping face and overcome daily challenges; and
  • Offering opportunities to consider new career paths and acquire knowledge.
