Are you passionate about building community and inspiring transformation? Do you love working with youth? We are currently seeking dedicated volunteers who understand the experience of Asian American young people and can serve as positive role models to support, lead and encourage them.  You will have a chance to form relationships, encourage positive identity development, and design activities to promote a safe and fun learning environment for youth. Korean Community Service Center serves Asian-American high school and middle school aged youth and their families through youth development activities geared toward relationship building, identity development and skills building. One of these youth programs is the WeKAN weekly middle school after-school program. This program facilitates mentoring and peer relationships, provides a safe space to explore identities, and works to build collective skills and knowledge for an equitable and inclusive community.

Main Duties

  • Communicate with KCSC staff in the week leading up to each program to understand the objectives, agenda and roles for each meeting
  • Attend the afterschool program. Program activities occur on Wednesdays, 3:00-6:30pm at Edmonds Waterfront Center. Volunteers may choose to come for either the 3:00-4:30 homework and mentoring time, or the 4:30-6:30 Skills Building time, or both.
  • Encourage safety, kindness and inclusion.
  • Engage with middle school youth at meetings to facilitate their social and identity development through informal conversation and mentorship.
  • Assist with classroom management – supply distribution, relaying instructions, supervising young people to maintain community agreements in order to ensure a safe, supportive environment.
  • Depending on coordination with KCSC staff and volunteer’s experience, volunteers may be asked to facilitate an activity that is appropriate for middle school youth and their learning/relationship building objectives.
