Graduation requirements

Student Status

Note: To maintain your status within the CLMS program, you must either be enrolled or on-leave in every quarter (except summer). If you are neither enrolled nor on-leave, you will be dropped from the program. If you later decide to come back to the program, you must reapply. Your reapplication materials will include a statement of why you dropped out in the first place and how you intend to finish the program. The readmission decision is at the discretion of program faculty. Details of the on-leave application procedure and links to the leave request form can be found here.

Courses

Students are required to take a minimum of 43 credits, as follows:

Grades

Students must earn an average of at least 3.3 in each of the following groups:

  1. 550, 566, ling elective
  2. 570, 571, 572
  3. 573, compling elective, compling/related field elective

All classes counted towards the degree other than Ling 600/700 must be taken for a grade (i.e., not CR/NC).

Any student failing to make a 3.3 average in any given group may either:

Any student earning less than 2.7 in a required course (550, 566, 570, 571, 572, 573) must retake the course. A grade below 2.7 in an elective may be made up with a different elective. In a course with an exam, with consent of the instructor, a student earning less than 2.7 has the option to retake the exam in a later quarter when the course is offered and have their course grade be based on their original grades but with the new final exam score.
