Overview of Chilean film, with an emphasis on the past two decades and re-democratization after dictatorship. Films will be screened in class on Mondays and Wednesdays, in Spanish with English subtitles, and will include most of the following: Miguel Littin, The Jackal of Nahueltoro; Patricio Guzman, Chile: Obstinate Memory and Nostalgia for the Light; Raul Ruiz, Night Across the Street; Alicia Scherson, Il Futuro; Andres Wood, Machuca and Violeta Went to Heaven; Pablo Larrain, Tony Manero, Post-Mortem, and No; and Sebastian Lelio, Gloria. Critical essays about the films will be posted to our Catalyst site. Students will keep a reading and viewing journal, take four quizzes, and write two four- to five-page analytical essays.
