Admissions Disruptions Due to Coronavirus

Due to the Level 1 Public Health Emergency Response in China related to the coronavirus, two major test providers have announced suspensions of tests utilized by many of our applicants:

  • ETS has suspended TOEFL testing in China through the end of February.
  • ETS has suspended GRE testing in China through the end of February.
  • IELTS has suspended IELTS testing in Mainland China, Macau SAR, and Hong Kong SAR.

The Graduate School recognizes these challenges and we are asking programs to consider extending deadlines for applicants who are impacted by this emergency, and noting your flexibility within the applications (through the Unit Profile) or on your programs’ websites. If you have questions regarding how to change deadlines, please contact GEMS at gemshelp@uw.edu.

The Graduate School will place language on the application log-in page that recommends applicants affected by this emergency connect directly with the programs to which they are applying.

We recognize that all programs may not have the flexibility to extend a deadline, but we encourage you to assist in this effort if possible.

The University of Washington has no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus among UW community members.

Thank you,
Joy Williamson-Lott
