Autumn 2020 In-Person Course Option for New International (F1 and J1) Graduate Students

The original version of this message was sent to GPAs & GPCs on August 11st via e-mail.

Incoming, new international graduate students who were not previously enrolled in March who will be entering the U.S. with an initial I-20 record will not be permitted to take 100% of courses online. Students starting a new degree program at the UW who wish to enter the U.S. for autumn quarter will be allowed to take online courses but must also register for at least one in-person course to maintain F status. More information is available at the International Student Services’ Planning for Autumn 2020 – What International Students need to know.
This in-person course requirement also applies to new students who are on a J-1 exchange visa.

The best option for these students is to enroll in an in-person course within their graduate academic program or unit.

If there are no in-person courses available within the program, you may discuss another option with your graduate students, the College of Education’s Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, EDLPS 549 (sections BA, BB, BC, or BD). This course is taught by Dr. Ed Taylor, vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

Interested graduate students should enroll in one of Dr. Taylor’s sections and NOT the section taught by Jondou Chen.  The course will have a one hour asynchronous component and a one hour synchronous in-person component, which is why the course appears to be only one hour in the time schedule.  (Title TBD)
