Memo 15: Pilot Program to Open Appeal Interview

Effective March 2021, the Graduate School is launching a pilot program to open the speaking appeal interview so that departments can submit an appeal for any candidate who is a non-native English speaker who has submitted a Graduate School application and has already satisfied Memo 8.
Memo 15 updates due to testing center limitations and COVID impacts:

  • As of March 2021, departments may submit an appeal interview request for any applicant whose application status is received, offered, or offered accepted. The online request form is modified to request the application’s system key number instead of a student number.
  • The appeal interview is conducted by the UW International English Language Programs (IELP).
  • As of August 2020: the speaking subscores requirement is temporarily waived; departments may submit an appeal interview request for any student who has satisfied the general English Language proficiency requirement per Memo 8.

Important Note: The speaking appeal interview may not be used by a department or graduate degree program to decide whether or not to offer an applicant admission. Its sole purpose is to determine whether the applicant is immediately eligible to be assigned teaching duties or should plan to enroll in ENGL 105: English for International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) before assigned teaching duties.
