Video Conferencing in Doctoral Examinations & Admissions Deferrals

June 17th: Amendment to Policy Exception for Video Conferencing in Doctoral Examinations

We are writing to amend the policy exception for Video Conferencing in Doctoral Examinations: The Graduate School will continue to allow a student or any member of the supervisory committee to participate in doctoral exams by video conference during Autumn Quarter 2021 and Winter Quarter 2022.

The policy exception for admissions deferrals extends only through Autumn Quarter 2021.

June 11: Policy Exceptions Extended Through Autumn Quarter 2021

With students, staff, and faculty returning to campus Autumn quarter, the Graduate School and Graduate Enrollment Management Services (GEMS) expect to resume pre-COVID-19 policies and procedures. However, we wanted to inform you of two exceptions that have been extended through Autumn Quarter 2021.

  • Video Conferencing in Doctoral Examinations: The Graduate School will continue to allow a student or any member of the supervisory committee to participate in doctoral exams by video conference during Autumn Quarter 2021. The Graduate School’s website has instructions and general guidance on video conferencing.
  • Admissions Deferrals: GEMS will consider a second admissions deferral for international students who have been admitted for Autumn Quarter 2021 and are unable to obtain their visa or travel to the U.S. and begin their studies in person. In all other cases, GEMS will resume its pre-pandemic admissions deferral policy: Per the applicant’s request, an application with an offer admission can be moved to a future quarter/year only once and within a one-year period.

We hope these policy exceptions support our graduate community as we transition back to campus.
