Graduate School Accepting International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

We are happy to announce that the Graduate School is accepting International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test scores. We will be updating Memo 8: Graduate School English Language Proficiency Requirements and Memo 15: Conditions of Appointment for TAs who are not Native Speakers of English with details including these scores:

 Memo 8: IELTS

  •    Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 6.5
  •    Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 7.0 or higher

 Memo 15: IELTS

  • Demonstrate spoken English proficiency with a test score of at least 7.0 on the speaking section of the IELTS.

We are notifying you now so you can begin communicating this information to prospective students. We anticipate that students will be able to self-report IELTS in the Graduate Application for Admission by Friday, July 23, and will update you once that change is in place. The IELTS is an addition to the other English language proficiency tests currently accepted by the Graduate School. Scores for all of these tests are valid for two years and must be valid on the date the application is submitted.

As a reminder, the Graduate School sets minimum required scores for demonstrating English language proficiency. Programs may require higher scores. If your program requires higher scores for IELTS or the other tests accepted by the Graduate School, the information must be posted on your admissions website and in the application for admission.

Thank you for helping us support your students have more options for demonstrating English language proficiency.
