Sam Powers is the inaugural Director and current Director Emeritus of Student Veteran Life at the University of Washington. She provided oversight and management of hiring, development of new programs, and centralization of existing services and resources available to UW student veterans. She provided outreach and collaborates with internal and external constituents. In her role as Director Emeritus, Sam serves as a well of knowledge in program creation and alteration, and serves as an advisor and consultant.

Jordan Houghton is the Assistant Director of Student Veteran Life at the University of Washington. He assists SVL through programs, student needs, and day to day operations. Jordan formerly served as the President of Husky United Military Veterans (H.U.M.V.) that founded the office in 2016.

Ying is a Navy Veteran, and recently finished his public health undergraduate work at the University of Washington. He transferred from Bellevue College and is looking forward to pursuing a career in nutrition or the medical field. Ying served from 2009-2015 as a nuclear electrician on the USS Cheyenne (SSN 773) out of Pearl Harbor. He has served on two Western Pacific and one Eastern Pacific Deployments. Originally from Miami, Florida, before serving in the United States Navy, Ying and his wife decided to move with their son to Seattle for a change in pace.

Liz Oaksmith is a therapist at the University of Washington Student Counseling Center (UWCC). She assists Student Veteran Life as a liaison who does outreach to the SVL center where she is available for general discussions, provides psychoeducation, answers any questions about mental health services, meets with vets for counseling, and provides support for veteran’s mental health at events.

Evan is a veteran of the US Navy, where he served aboard submarines from 2013-2022. He worked in aerospace manufacturing at Blue Origin prior to attending the University of Washington as a full-time student.

Lawrence is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving for 5 years as an Aircraft Metals Technician. Lawrence is originally from the Northeast, but eventually wound up in the Pacific Northwest at his duty station.

Brandon is a current student and peer mentor at the Office of Student Veteran Life, where he enjoys supporting fellow student veterans and military-connected students that are navigating their benefits and campus life.

Spencer had served as a Casket Bearer in Arlington National Cemetery for the US Navy Ceremonial Guard from 2014-2017, then continued to serve as a Hospital Corpsman until 2021.
Originally out of the Nashville area, he and his partner have settled in Seattle for the iconic scenery and the warm, sunny climate that the PNW has to offer.

Des, originally from Jefferson City, Missouri, served in the U.S. Navy from 2017-2024 as an Intelligence Specialist. They served as a geospatial analyst on two operational deployments aboard USS IWO JIMA and USS BATAAN. Notably, Des is a “Blue Nose” having crossed into the arctic circle. They witnessed the aurora borealis at sea.

Brian is a U.S. Navy veteran who served from 1989–1993 as an Electrician’s Mate. Following his military service, he worked for nearly two decades as a union electrician, including time as a licensed master electrician, before transitioning into higher education. He is currently a full-time student at the University of Washington pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare, with plans to continue on to earn his MSW.

Larrianna, a born and raised Washingtonian, served in the U.S. Air Force from 2019-2023 as a Russian Cryptologic Language Analyst at Fort George G. Meade in Maryland.

Dale , born in Oklahoma and raised in Arizona, served in the U.S. Air Force from 2015-2024 as a Cyber Systems Operations Specialist at Travis AFB, CA, Izmir AB, Turkey, and Kadena AB, Japan. After his enlistment ended, he enrolled at the University of Washington to study Marine Biology.

Vega Parwata is a U.S. Navy veteran and former Naval Military Police officer who served in law enforcement and leadership roles, including mentoring junior sailors. He is currently majoring in Social Work and works with Student Veteran Life, where he supports fellow student veterans through peer support and resource navigation. Outside of school and work, Vega enjoys staying active, swimming, traveling, and exploring new places.

Betty grew up in a military family, with her siblings, grandfather and dad serving in almost every branch. She’s been living in Washington for nearly ten years after moving from Texas, and hopes to return to the sunny state after graduation.
