March, 2015. AJAS Conference 2015

WSAS sponsored students, Swetha Shutthanandan and Kathy Landoni have successful week at AAAS/AJAS Conference 2015

Following AAAS sessions, Swetha and Kathy gave their AJAS oral presentations in the afternoon. Swetha chose the traditional symposium format and gave an excellent presentation. Kathy chose a new informal round table format and greatly enjoyed her discussion with other student researchers.

WSAS Seventh Annual Meeting
Health Disparities in Washington State: Narrowing the Gap?


The date and topic for the 2014 annual meeting has been set. Registration to begin in Summer, 2014. It will be held at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, and will run from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. The program will include a luncheon, scientific symposium, and business meeting for members of the Academy, followed by a reception and dinner at which spouses will be welcome.

WSAS Founding member, Dr. R. James Cook is honored by Washington State Senate in Senate Resolution 8677

On February 4, 2014, Dr. R. James Cook, Emeritus, Washington State University, and founding member of WSAS was honored by the Washington State Senate for his distinguished research career in soil and crop sciences.

Senate Resolution 8677, sponsored by Senator Jim Hargrove, outlines Dr. Cook‘s career from his time as Chief Scientist with the US Department of Agriculture to his 40-year career at Washington State University, where he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Cook and his colleague, Dr. Robert Edmonds were also asked to testify during a work session before the Senate Natural Resources and Parks Committee on the results the WSAS report, Opportunities for Addressing Laminated Root Rot Caused by Phellinus Sulphurascens in Washington's Forest (PDF). The report was produced by WSAS in cooperation with the Department of Natural Resources.

November, 2013. Report on Inititative 522 released. At the request of six legislators, the Washington State Academy of Sciences provided an independent white paper addressing the science underlying the use of products from genetically modified plants and/or animals in food and the impacts of required labeling of foods containing ingredients from genetically modified plants and/or animals.

August, 2012. WSAS releases review on The Puget Sound Partnership progress in developing the scientific basis for achieving a vibrant Puget Sound.

» Description of Academy involvement in PSP effort

As the Action Agenda is finalized and the Science Plan implemented, WSAS has been asked by the Legislature to work with the Partnership to periodically assess its work. Discussions concerning this role of WSAS are underway, and plans will be developed and communicated to members.
