mobilization events   •ministerial week events

The telling of the timing of many of the events that surrounded the WTO's Ministerial in Seattle, Washington in late 1999 is contradictory, the result of events being spread over a relatively large geographic region, the numbers of people involved, the power of the events themselves, the passage of time, and in some cases, the result of strongly-held political and ideological beliefs.

There have been many attempts to sort out the timing and relationship between events; the interviews produced by the WTO History Project are one example, the City of Seattle's WTO Accountability Project's final report is another. What these materials show is that "truth" is subjective.

In an attempt to facilitate research relating to the timing of events, the participants and locations, the WTO History Project has developed several timelines of events related the the protests. In the near future (by the end of 2001) these timelines will be fully interactive and searchable. For the time being, access to the timelines is limited to a downloadable Excel spreadsheet. Also for the time being, only one timeline, a timeline of mobilization events before the protests, is being posted. We will post a timeline of events during the Ministerial week as development is completed.
