Join the award-winning publishing team at Chin Music Press for a quarter of reading, discussion, and teamwork in our Pike Place Market office.

Chin Music Press is an independent publisher of beautifully designed books that span multiple genres, languages, and cultures. Our press primarily focuses on titles from or about East Asia with emphasis on works in translation from Japan. In addition, our imprint, Broken Levee Books, publishes titles that look to the

POSITION DETAILS:

 

Publishing Intern

  • Positions Available: 1
  • Duties:

o Reading and evaluating excerpts from manuscripts with Chin Music Press style in mind
o Effectively communicating opinions about manuscripts under consideration for publication o Working with editor to content edit and proof manuscript drafts under consideration for publication
o Aiding in book “post-mortem” evaluations

• Skills desired/developed

o Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style

o Critical reading and curatorial skills
o Professional communication

Production

  • Positions available: 1
  • Duties:

o Working with publicity and editorial staff to compose fliers, posters, and event cover photos

o Coordinating with editorial and publicity staff to brainstorm and revise market outreach
o Participating in the design and revision of book layout
o Developing engaging press kits

o Proofing PR materials

• Skills desired/developed:

o Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)

o Collaborative revision

o Communication

These unpaid internships will begin January 8, 2018 and end on March 16, 2018 with opportunity for extension for those with exceptional communication skills and an understanding of Chin Music Press’s publishing interests and style. Additionally, letters of recommendation, class credit, and future paid positions may be considered.

All potential interns should submit a schedule request form (download here) that fits Chin Music Press’s office hours (M-F, 10AM-6PM), keeping in mind that there is an approximately 10 hour/week commitment for this position. Please also note that Chin Music Press prefers that interns work at least half of their hours in-office, though options for remote work are available on a case-by-case basis.
