HILLTOPIA is a Liberatory Filmmaking and Narrative Justice fellowship with a companion training on trauma informed storytelling and racial justice through an impact lens. This project is geared toward displaced residents of Tacoma/Hilltop, and those with cultural and historical connections to Hilltop, that will be trained by skilled teaching artists in documentary filmmaking and paid to produce a 10-15 minute short film on the impact of displacement and gentrification in Hilltop while highlighting the creative resiliency of BIPoC Hilltop residents.
This virtual fellowship will take place primarily via Zoom over 8-weeks beginning in March 2021 and culminating in virtual community screening events that will be free and open to the public in June of 2021.
Eligibility:

Be currently working on a short film that highlights stories or residents of Hilltop

Commit to participating in up to (8) 3-hour weekly trainings from March-May 2021

Commit to participating in up to (3) screening and community engagement events

Have a willingness to engage in critical conversations around race, social justice and displacement

Complete a short documentary by June 2021 – with the support of the Teaching Artists and Mentors

Work thoughtfully with the other participants in the fellowship

Be open to receiving support and feedback when needed

Have meaningful connections to the Hilltop neighborhood in Tacoma, WA
Fellows will receive $2,000 for their participation + production and completion of an 10-15 min film and will have access to film equipment and other materials and supplies as needed.
Who We Are Centering: people who identify as Black/African descent and other *BIPoC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) with familial or cultural ties to Hilltop, and folks from these communities who have been or are at risk of being displaced from Hilltop due to rent increases, housing and food insecurity, and other intersecting forms of oppression related to gentrification and rapid development.
