Summer 2022 UX Design Internship

We are looking for two UX Designers and/or Design Researchers for a 3-month, paid, Summer 2022 Internship. You’ll be working within both our design team and a client-facing project team using Human-Centered Design and Equity-Centered Design research and strategy practices. We work with a broad range of clients from non-profits to startups and large corporations.

We’re open to candidates not based in Seattle, and will support remote work even when there isn’t a global pandemic.

What will you do day-to-day?

  • Contribute to the exploration of interaction patterns, visual design, research, and strategy approaches for a client-facing new product, service or strategy
  • Collaborate with design, strategy, technology, and project management daily on your client-facing team to help your team build the product
  • Collaborate with our design team internally to research, design, and create a new product, service, or strategy for Substantial
  • Present and communicate design decisions and deliverables to your team
  • Immerse yourself in understanding client industries and problem spaces to greater understand client needs
  • Define opportunities, strategies, and user needs with research synthesis methods
  • Meet with leadership and senior decision-makers to ask questions about Substantial or the industry as a whole

Requirements

Who are we looking for?

To be eligible to apply to our internship program, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • You are currently enrolled or will be a new graduate in summer 2022 from an undergraduate or graduate-level program in design, UX strategy, UX research, psychology, sociology, or related field.
  • The ability to work the majority of your hours in PST
  • A portfolio that showcases your strengths as a UX designer and/or researcher/strategist
  • Preferred: A familiarity with Figma, Miro/Mural, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or other prototyping tools
  • You are a proactive, collaborative project contributor and effective communicator
  • You work together with project teams to understand, act, and deliver on next steps translated from product and client needs
  • You have a passion and interest in Human-Centered and Equity-Centered design/strategy
  • An eagerness and openness to learn
