Exhibit Graphic Designer – MoPOP

SUMMARY

This position works simultaneous as a graphic designer and exhibit designer and is responsible for the planning and designing of museum displays at MoPOP. Graphic design elements include labels, illustrations, and text panels for exhibits, that inform and educate museum visitors. Exhibit design elements include environmental treatments, exhibition layouts, and interactive displays intended to educate and entertain a multigenerational audience.

The exhibit graphic designer works with administrative, curatorial, and exhibit staff members to determine theme, content, interpretative/informational purpose, exhibit location, budget, promotion, and timelines, including schedule for fabrication and installation of exhibit components. In addition, this position works to support institutional graphic design requirements and production needs within the museum.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED)

  • Develop interpretive graphics, including text panels, artifact citations, info-graphics, and illustrations
  • Work within exhibit team to craft exhibit graphics that support and illuminate the exhibit goals, content, and design intent
  • Create typographic standards and layout text for exhibit panels
  • Administer production of graphics; work with vendors to secure bids for printing and/or custom sign fabrication, and supervise the production process; oversee and direct contract designers/illustrators when needed
  • Maintain quality controls on graphic production
  • Produce presentation drawings and present design proposals to the teams responsible for developing and approving new exhibits
  • Plans layout and display of objects in the museum space
  • Decide wall colors and arrangements of objects
  • Organize and keep current files for all drawings, documents, and communications regarding exhibit development and production
  • Create an archive of all graphics and design-related files, samples, and collateral at the end of each project
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of permanent exhibit graphics
  • Support smaller design projects such as collaboration with marketing on exhibit identities
  • Ensure the integrity of the MoPOP brand on all internally and externally produced design projects
  • Special projects as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS)

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or B.F.A.) in Graphic Design or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Minimum three years of professional experience in graphic design with design of innovative, visitor-focused exhibits
  • Proven experience in the use of Adobe Design Suite and Microsoft Office programs
  • Proficiency in creating 3D renderings to scale for exhibit layouts and shop-drawings with programs like SketchUp and AutoCAD
  • Demonstrated knowledge of space planning, museum exhibition best practices and standards, exhibition lighting, and integrating multimedia concepts into a traditional museum model
  • Working knowledge of various production processes such as flatbed printing, vinyl, CNC, and various substrate uses
  • Proven abilities and experience in illustration, image prep, typography, layout, bid preparation, and ability to read floorplans and elevations is preferred
  • Knowledge of materials and construction techniques unique to the museum field
  • Ability to maintain budgets and keep to timelines
  • Must be able to prioritize and use sound time management skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once
  • Adept at working on teams
  • Proven ability to provide effective customer service for internal and external client groups
  • Detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills to manage a continuous workflow in a high volume, multi-tasking environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
