START Overview: The Strategic Analysis, Research and Training (START) Center in the Department of Global Health uses an innovative mentorship model to provide high-quality analysis and research support to public health organizations while developing applied research and analytic skills of graduate Research Assistants in global and domestic public health. Launched in 2011 through a partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Center supports the Gates Foundation and other organizations working in global health.

 

The START Center team includes graduate students and faculty mentors with diverse backgrounds in public health, clinical practice, epidemiology, and related fields. The Center partners with the Foster Global Innovation Fellows Program at the Arthur W. Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship to incorporate MBA students into our teams, integrating a business approach into our analyses. With combined field experience on six continents, START teams approach research questions with a nuanced understanding of the complex challenges that affect health in communities across the globe and here at home.

Position Summary: This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Design Student Assistant. START serves as a student-led research and consulting group for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other global health organizations. Quarterly, we present numerous reports and PowerPoints to our clients. In an effort to better compete with consulting firms, we would like to add a design student to our team. The design student will lend their design skills to the preparation of reports and presentations. Specific projects depend on client requests. Project scope and content vary!

Dates of Appointment: Winter Quarter 2018

Position Type: Student assistant, 10-20 hours per week. Paid hourly. There may be opportunities for extension in future quarters, dependent upon performance, project fit, program needs, and funding.

 

Eligibility: This position is open to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Washington who will be enrolled in a degree program during Winter and Spring Quarters 2018.

  • Experience in planning and managing tasks and deliverables
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment and ensure on-time delivery of high quality results
  • Ability to get up to speed in new content areas
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and adapt one’s communication style to a range of situations
