It is with deep sadness that the Department of Bioethics & Humanities at the University of Washington acknowledges the passing of our colleague Dr. James C. Whorton, Emeritus Faculty Member. Dr. Whorton was a cherished and respected member of our community whose work and collegial spirit left a lasting impression on the department.
The Department of Bioethics and Humanities is pleased to announce Rebecca Barone, double majoring in Political Science Honors and Law, Society, and Justice, and minoring in Bioethics as this year’s recipient of the Wylie Burke Endowed Scholarship! The purpose of this endowed scholarship is to support University of Washington undergraduate and graduate students studying the social, ethical, and policy implications of health research and/or healthcare.
Dr. Malia Fullerton, Professor in the Department of Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Washington School of Medicine, was recently featured in an interview with KIRO Newsradio reporter Luke Duecy.

Dr. Nancy Jecker, Professor of Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Washington School of Medicine, was awarded a 2026 Brocher Foundation Residency. The Brocher Foundation Residency supports researchers from around the world to engage in intensive research projects in a peaceful setting on the shores of Lake Geneva, at the Foundation’s home in Hermance, Switzerland. It facilitates the exchange of ideas between resident researchers.

Dr. Nancy Jecker was awarded the 2025 Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) International BRIDGE Fellowship. The fellowship supports former JSPS International Fellows with an eye to sustaining and growing collaborative research between American and Japanese scholars.
We are proud to announce a new Summer Seminar in Healthcare Ethics Scholarship this year in honor of Dr. Jim Kirkpatrick, a beloved former SS faculty, Montlake committee chair, and ethics consultant. His unexpected passing in January has left a profound void among us, and his absence is deeply felt throughout the UW Bioethics community.
