Wreck Alert - Washington Coast

After a report of 40 live and dead birds on the beach in less than 1/4 mile near Long Beach, WA, and similar reports from as far north as Neah Bay, COASST volunteers in Washington are out on the beaches to document the second of two wrecks since late September.

Foam released by the same algae (Akashiwo sanguinea) that led to the death of 100s of scoters on the northern Washington coast has been sighted at several locations, now primarily affecting loons and murres.

Feathers, blood, and whole carcasses are being collected for further diagnostics - we'll update the status of this wreck as soon as we receive more information.

Dead scoters

A Common Murre, with belly and feet covered in the de-waterproofing foam created by Akashiwo sanguinea.
