Desmarestia viridis (O.F. Müller) J.V. Lamouroux 1813: 45
Original publication: Lamouroux, J.V.F. (1813). Essai sur les genres de la famille des thalassiophytes non articulées. Annales du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris 20: 21-47, 115-139, 267-293, Plates 7-13.
The genus Desmarestia has undergone several taxonomic revisions over the last 200 years. it has been placed amoung two Rhodophyte taxa (Iridea and Gigartina) as well as amoung other Phaeophyte taxa (Chordaria, Gymnogongrus and Fucus), more recently molecular phylogenetic analysis supports the hypotesis that the Desmarestiales are monoplhyletic and that the family Desmarestiaceae most likely originated in the southern hemisphere (Peters et al. 1997).
