Protrusive activity of NEM/forerunner cells and other marginal deep cells during gastrulation.
Cell crawling and protrusive activity
Play QuickTime movie of NEM/forerunner cell morphogenesis:
This embryo is oriented in a dorsal view position with the animal pole toward the top-left. Simultaneous confocal and Nomarski time lapse data are shown for this embryo. The left panel shows the Nomarski image, the right panel shows the confocal image. The time lapse movie is at a higher magnification.
The embryo was labeled with BODIPY-Sphingomyelin to label the membrane surface of all the cells. The cells at the margin of the blastoderm are undergoing extensive lobodipodial (bleb-like) protrusive activity. The NEM/forerunner cells are located in front of the margin. Notice that the NEM/forerunner cells also have lobodipodial protrusions except at their most vegetal connection with the EVL-YSL border.
