What standards to I use to evaluate adequacy of intake?
The Institute of Medicine is in the process of revising recommendations for nutrient intake levels. Known collectively as Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), the reports include several guidelines:

  • Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). Average level of daily intake to meet requirements for most healthy individuals.
  • Adequate Intake (AI). Recommended intake level for a group of people, used when RDA cannot be determined.
  • Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL). The highest level of nutrient intake that is likely not to pose health risks.
  • Estimated Average Requirement (EAR). Estimated level of daily intake to meet the requirement of half of the healthy individuals in a group.

Detailed information about these recommendations can be found on the NAS website.
