The University of Washington Department of
Environmental Health has a laboratory facility dedicated to research on Optical Remote Sensing (ORS) of environmental contaminants.
This laboratory is directed by Professor Michael Yost. The lab is located
at 668 Northlake Way NE, a few blocks from the UW
main campus. The building facilities include offices and a large wind tunnel for indoor testing of ORS instruments.
Current research is directed to measuring gases with infrared light
spectroscopy using Open Path FTIR (OP-FTIR) and to
measuring aerosols with LIDAR. We also are
developing mathematical algorithms for interpreting ORS data by applying
Computed Tomography and other inversion methods to produce spatially resolved
maps of contaminants in workplaces and to locate outdoor pollution emission
sources.
