Summer 2012 Global Health trips

Volunteers sought for international summer program Visit our website to learn about work-travel trips and opportunities for a life-changing experience

January 6, 2012 SEATTLE – Health care professionals and members of the community are invited to volunteer to travel and work around the world during Summer 2012 as participants in Global Impact, a Seattle Community Colleges service learning program presented in partnership with Seattle-area medical, education and service organizations.

For the past six years, local teams have paired with teams from the host country to provide medical and dental services. The teams also work on sustainable infrastructure projects such as the installation of clean-burning stoves, water filters and composting toilets that contribute to the overall health of rural communities.

Global Impact is sponsoring three programs this summer — Vietnam Village Trek (August 18 – August 28) Medical trek and village development projects in the Mai Chau Highlands of Northern Vietnam

Peru Quest (August 4 – August 18) Healthcare and green/sustainable environmental projects in the Sacred Valley of the Incas

Tanzania Expedition (August 24 – September 8) Health care, education and sustainable agriculture projects in a regional hospital, elementary schools, orphanages and an agriculture college

BACKGROUND Global Impact was inspired by the international programs of the Seattle Community Colleges, which serve students from more than 100 countries around the world; by the region’s leadership in health care; and by the health care education focus of the colleges, whose combined programs comprise the largest health care education provider in the region. “These elements provide the foundation for taking our education programs to the next level of development and significance,” according to Global Impact program administrator Dr. Andrea Insley, district-wide coordinator of International Programs. The program offers an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people in developing countries, and in return, Insley said, “participants find themselves changed by the experience.”
