The Washington Global Health Alliance Discovery Series , in conjunction with Global Health Week (April 15-20) presents: “Malaria Today: Challenges and Opportunities” Robert Newman, MD, MPH Director, Global Malaria Programme World Health Organization Clinical Associate Professor Department of Global Health University of Washington Details on the WGHA Discovery Series lecture are as follows: Location: K-069 Auditorium, Health Sciences Building University of Washington, 1959 NE Pacific St., Seattle, WA 98195 Time: Wednesday, April 17, 2013, 2:30-3:30 p.m. Reception: Rotunda Café, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Biography Robert Newman received his BA in English Literature from Williams College, his MD from Johns Hopkins University, and his MPH from the University of Washington. He is a pediatrician and is currently the director of the Global Malaria Programme at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. As Country Coordinator of Health Alliance International in Mozambique in the late 1990s, he was astounded at the human toll of malaria in Africa. He has dedicated the last 15 years to combating the disease, first at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, and more recently at WHO. He believes that through relentless investment in scaling-up the malaria interventions we have today, developing new tools for tomorrow, and fostering leadership in affected countries, this ancient foe can be defeated.
