This Week in AED (11/10)

Greetings Premeds, I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday weekend. And as you gear up for school once again, come join us for AED’s Fourth General Meeting, Tuesday November 12 from 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM in Savery 260. This meeting will feature a number of speakers from a couple of majors and minors, including Medical Anthropology, Bioethics and Humanities, and Global Health as well as a premed advisor. Come hear more about non-hard science related majors/minors that have a prehealth appeal and learn more about the premed path! Q&A sessions will be had, so come with questions as well! PLEASE remember to RSVP (https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/eschrick/218099) so we know how much food to provide. AED’s Officer Mentor Program is underway! If you filled out the very first survey a few weeks back, you should have heard from your AED Officer mentor! If not, please contact me (jackmo@uw.edu). For those who filled out the recent survey, we’ll assign you shortly. And for those who are still interested in having a officer mentor, fill out the survey: (https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/jackmo/217942). Look for another email later this week for a few upcoming AED philanthropy events. In other news, here are a few events to look forward to around campus: Golden Key will be hosting a book drive during Finals week (Dec 9 – 13). Book bins are located in Kane Hall, HUB, Mary Gates 131, McMahon, and Haggett and the donated books (of any kind) will go to an organization called Better World Books to sell/donate. A portion of the profit then goes to an organization of our choosing and our Golden Key Chapter has decided to donate the funds to an organization called WorldFund which aims to fix literacy problems from the bottom up – they use the donated money to train educational professionals throughout Latin America Also, check out UW Dance Marathon, coming up soon! This does not count as Philanthropy or Social because you have to pay $15 to register, but it is a great cause nonetheless. Register here: (https://bit.ly/uwdm2013). The Dance Marathon is a nationwide event that is sponsored by Children’s Miracle Network, a coalition of top pediatric hospitals across the United States. All the money raised goes to Seattle Children’s uncompensated care fund, which helps cover any leftover medical expenses that a family may not be able to pay for. Our school’s event, The Husky Miracle, will be held on November 16th from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. For our 6 hours, you are not allowed to sit down: we stand for those who can’t. There are games, activities, patient stories, food and everyone’s favorite part: learning the line dance. I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the week! – Jack Mo Webmaster, AED 2013-2014
