Recruiting 16 more Dream Project mentors at Kent-Meridian HS

Hi UW students! I am reaching out to you because at some point in high school, you had someone who supported you as you navigated the path to higher education — and we all know it wasn’t easy. Do you remember studying for the SAT/ACT, writing and re-writing your personal statements, and trying to figure out who, when, and where you had to send those transcripts? So do all of the students we work with-only they don’t have someone to support them as they apply to college: that’s where you come in. This quarter we are faced with an interesting challenge: to lower the mentor to mentee ratio at Kent-Meridian High School, our largest partner high school. Currently, we work with 350 students in their junior (soon to be senior) class and we have 42 UW mentors who visit this high school. Currently that’s nearly 9 students to 1 mentor! When you think about editing personal statements, supporting students as they apply to college, and being able to put as much time and energy into your student’s success as you can, having 9 students for just one college student is a bit much. That’s why we need you. Every mentor we get to come to this school lowers the ratio and provides a better experience for our students. Our goal is to recruit at least 16 more mentors to reach a 1 to 6 ratio or lower. We know it’s early in the morning (7:30-10:20am on Tuesdays) but no one graduates from college wishing they’d slept in more often, right? But they do graduate wishing they’d given back to their community and made a lasting and meaningful impact. Please consider signing up for Dream Project this Spring Quarter and becoming a mentor who helps more students get to college — it’s not too late! To become a mentor at Kent-Meridian, register for EDUC 260 and EDUC 369Q, each 1 credit. The EDUC 260 lecture counts as I&S credit. You can also participate as a volunteer without earning credit. Learn more at www.dreamproject.org/join If Kent-Meridian doesn’t fit your schedule, check out the time schedule to see what other sections of EDUC 369 are still open, including Renton, Federal Way, Auburn, Foster, and YouthForce.
