Welcome to the First Steps Nutrition Modules
This curriculum is for RDs with the First Steps program and is a set of self-study modules.

When you select a module, you will be asked to log in to our system. If this is your first visit, please enter your e-mail and a password of your choosing (we will e-mail you the password you've chosen so that you can keep it on hand for future reference). You will then be asked to provide your name and other information that will appear on any certificates that you earn through your review of this material.

Module 1 - The Role of the MSS RD in First Steps

This module reviews the role of the MSS RD in the First Steps Program
Estimated time to complete: 30 minutes

Module 2 - Nutrition and Normal Pregnancy

This module reviews some of the roles that food and nutritional status play in typical pregnancies, and highlights a few specific factors that can affect nutrient needs.
Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes

Module 3 - Nutrition Assessment

This module reviews the process of nutrition assessment, highlighting the nutritional issues of the pregnant woman.
Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes

Module 4 - Medical Nutrition Therapy for Specific Conditions

This module reviews basic medical nutrition therapy for some common complications associated with pregnancy: gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders, overweight, underweight.
Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes

Module 5 - Nutrition and the Postpartum Period

This module reviews the nutrition-related issues during the postpartum period.
Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes

Module 6 - Nutrition and the Young Infant

This module reviews the process of nutrition assessment for the young infant. Nutrient needs are discussed, and interventions for some common nutrition-related problems are reviewed.
Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes

Module 7 - Medical Nutrition Therapy for Specific Conditions - Infants

In this module, some conditions that are common in early infancy are reviewed, along with some of the interventions that RDs can recommend.
Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes

Module 8 - Breastfeeding Assessment and Support

This module is intended to provide the dietitian with the skills and tools to help support women who are breastfeeding, to identify problems with breastfeeding, and to suggest potential solutions.
Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes

Module 9 - Skill-Building for First Steps Practitioners

This module reviews some concepts and skills that are important when working with families. These skills are not necessarily specific to nutrition, but can help the clinician better understand the client’s perspective.
Estimated time to complete: 30 minutes
