1. Is the UW gay, lesbian, bi, trans, queer, two-spirit, questioning, intersex, same- gender-loving, and ally (hereafter referred to as glbtqtqi) affirming?
This is always a tough question to answer about such a large university (approximately 40,000 students). The UW is a microcosm of the larger U.S. culture, with an urban bent. This means that many people are openly affirming of glbtqtqi folks, others have never thought about it, and still others are not affirming.
However, in general, the UW and Seattle is a welcoming and affirming environment for glbtqtqi people. Along with The Q Center, the UW has a vibrant, active, and visible Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, and Transgender (GBLTC) Student Commission; one of seven student commissions funded by the Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW). The Women's Action Commission (WAC) houses the Q-something Women Identified Interest Group (QWIIG).
Students, faculty, and staff can join the Campus-Q listserve and feel free to share anything of lgbtqtqi interest. Bitter old hags and grumpy old fags (BOHGOF) is a social group geered toward the "mature queer UW community;" e.g. graduate students, faculty, and staff. Other glbtqtqi student groups such as PrideDawgs come and go with the changing of the school year.
