Thrifty (or
"Frillless") in Seattle
If you would like to attend
SALT13 but feel that you cannot afford the travel and accommodations expenses,
then we suggest the following to minimize the cost. We would like to have you
here!
1. Try on-line services such
as priceline.com. If you are flexible
time-wise and are willing to change planes, this is known to be a good way of
saving money for your trip. We heard some success stories from our graduate
students.
2. We recommend using Metro
bus for ground transportation in Seattle. Plan on arriving in SeaTac (i.e. the
airport) during the day (i.e. before 6). You need to transfer once in Downtown
Seattle, but you can do so in the tunnel, and
it is very easy to do so. (With Travelodge and Silver Cloud Inn, you may need
to transfer twice.) See How to use Metro bus to
get to Univ. District for details. It only costs $1.25 or $2.00 (depending
upon the time of your trip) for your entire trip from the airport to your
hotel. We suggest that you travel light if you use Metro bus.
3. Try inexpensive
accommodations options such as College Inn or University Hotel/Motel. (See Accommodations.) You can also ask for crash
space (= free accommodations offered by members of our department). Please email us if you are interested in this
option.
4. Note that your
registration fee ($30 for the entire conference if you are a student) includes dinner on Saturday night and snacks during the day. So your
meal expenses could be small as well.
