Collegial Evaluation of Teaching
Institute of Technology

Approved 2 December, 2011

Evaluation Committee

At the start of each academic year in which a faculty member is to receive a collegial evaluation of teaching effectiveness, the Director will appoint a two-person evaluation committee of full-time faculty to carry out the evaluation. At least one committee member must be tenured and equal or senior in rank to the faculty member being reviewed, and at least one committee member must teach a course in the same degree program as one of the courses for which the faculty member is being reviewed. In addition, the committee must have at least one member that was not on the previous year's committee, unless this is not possible due to staffing constraints.

Shadow Committee Members

Untenured faculty members may serve as shadow members of evaluation committees. A shadow member takes part in the committee's discussions, but does not contribute to the evaluation document. Untenured faculty members are encouraged to serve on at least one evaluation committee, in some capacity, every academic year. Changes to the shadow members of a committee do not satisfy the requirement that the committee must have at least one member that was not on the previous year's committee.

Evaluation Report

The evaluation will include a review of the faculty member's teaching material (as specified below) and one or more classroom observations by members of the evaluation committee. The result will be a written document authored by the committee as a whole that includes the Teaching Material Evaluation Form, the Teaching Observation Form, and additional comments as necessary. This document will be shared with the faculty member being reviewed, and the evaluation committee will discuss the evaluation with the faculty member in a face to face meeting. Following this meeting, the evaluation committee may wish to make revisions to the evaluation document. When these revisions have been completed, the faculty member being reviewed may add a statement that becomes part of the evaluation document. This statement can provide additional explanation and may describe concrete changes to teaching that will be undertaken in response to the comments made by the evaluation committee.

Teaching Material Evaluation

The teaching material will be evaluated using the Teaching Material Evaluation Form.

Classroom Observation

At least one classroom observation, of minimum 1 hour duration, will be undertaken by a member of the evaluation committee. This observation will be arranged at a time mutually agreed upon by the observer and the faculty member observed. The observation will be carried out using the 3-part process as described in the CIDR Classroom Observation document. The Teaching Observation Form will be used for documenting the observation. Either the evaluation committee or the faculty member observed may request additional observations

Teaching Material

A section on teaching will be included in each faculty member's annual report. This section will include:

  1. a list by quarter of each course taught since the previous annual report, including the quarter in which the report is written, with the number of students at end of term indicated;
  2. a summary of student evaluation scores for all listed courses;
  3. links to syllabi and all course material for all courses taught since the previous annual report;
  4. any additional teaching-related material that the faculty member would like to be considered;
  5. a reflective statement by the faculty member that discusses the strengths and weaknesses of two different listed courses and plans for improvement;
  6. a discussion of additional teaching-related activities, which might include: students mentored and advised for research, internships, and projects; teaching awards; grants relevant to teaching, and any teaching-related workshop or conference attendance; and
  7. a discussion of the faculty member's teaching-related goals and plans until the next collegial evaluation.
