Stefan Talke received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley and worked for several years in the software industry of Silicon Valley. In 1999, Stefan returned to Berkeley to work on a PhD in the hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics of intertidal flats. From January 2005 to August 2007, Stefan worked as a post-doc at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, making measurements and models of the sediment dynamics and oxygen depletion in the turbidity maximum of the Ems estuary (see Ems Research ). In August 2007, Stefan joined the group of Alex Horner-Devine to work on the COHSTREX project which aims to better understand the ubiquitous coherent structures or ‘boils’ that occur in rivers and estuaries.
