Training Opportunities

Dear Mentors and Trainees:Although the situation at NIH remains chaotic, we hope that  NIDA P30 Award may again have salary funds to support Undergraduate Research this summer (10 weeks: Tuesday, 6/17 – Friday, 8/22). In addition to a supervised research experience, we intend to offer five Professional Development sessions (10 am – 11am in J-156, alternate Fridays: 6/27; 7/11; 7/25; 8/8; 8/22) led by postdocs and graduate students. These sessions are open to all UW UG’s working in NAPE labs and mandatory for the NIDA P30 supported NAPE Trainees. Topics likely to be covered:

  • How to prepare for Grad School
  • How to apply and choose the right Grad Program for you
  • How to survive and thrive while in Grad School
  • How to consider your professional options once you complete your doctorate

The fifth session will have the trainees giving a 10-15 min talk on their research to the whole NAPE community.A 1-page application, written by the trainee with consent & input from their supervisor should be submitted by April 18th to Dr. Charles Chavkin (cchavkin@uw.edu), subject line: “Undergraduate Research Support 2025”. The application should provide:

  1. Name of Student and name of immediate supervisor: PI, PD, or GS
  2. Description of Trainee: include undergraduate institution, major and year; describe any prior research experience; describe professional goals – med school, grad school, etc.
  3. Research Support: Indicate whether the trainee has been previously supported by research grants, stipends, or other funding sources (e.g., institutional or external fellowships). If applicable, specify the type of support, funding source, and duration (e.g. Husky Promise, Pell Grant, Mary Gates Award, etc).
  4. Description of Project: 1/2 page is sufficient; include a description of the specific training objectives.
  5. Expected number of hours per week and term of appointment: Trainees will be paid hourly through workday. Priority will be given to trainees able to commit full-time (30 hrs/wk), for the full 10 weeks.
  6. Affirm that the trainee will commit to attending all the Professional Development sessions. The applications will be ranked by the P30 Leadership Committee and awards will be announced by May 16th.
