RESEARCH AT THE UW

The Research Environment at the University of Washington

View of Mt Rainier from Drumheller Fountain The University of Washington (UW) is an outstanding research community. Collectively, the Health Sciences and Basic Sciences consistently rank in the top tier of research universities. All major instrumentation, including cutting-edge methods, are available on the UW campus, or at nearby associates in the Seattle biotech community. Importantly, the UW is characterized by collaborative interactions that make it fun to do research here. Please see the links to related programs on the Atkins home page, such as the Biomolecular Structure and Design Program, the Center for Ecogenetics and Environmental Health, The Center for Nanotechnology, and the new Bioanalytical Pharmacy Core, funded through the Center for Intracellular Delivery of Biologics (CIDB).

Life in Seattle

Pike Place Market, Seattle Seattle offers all the advantages of a major city, with few of the hassles. It has a thriving music and art scene, as well as an abundant collection of fantastic restaurants to satisfy every budget. Seattle has a high impact biotechnology and pharmaceutical sector, and it is the home of the internet/ computer support industry. From within the city there are spectacular views of surrounding mountain ranges and bodies of water, and these natural resources are easily accessible for a more interactive experience. The outlying areas provide world-class hiking, climbing, backpacking, boating, skiing, etc. And, of course, we have fantastic coffee. The biggest hassle, of course, is . . . parking. And, contrary to popular belief, the weather is very pleasant for most of the year.
