Call to Coast Salish Artists
Seattle Aquarium’s Ocean Pavilion Entry

Deadline: Monday, June 29, 2020, 11:59pm PST
Apply: indigenouscreatives.submittable.com/submit
Budget: $200,000 + materials and support provided

Summary
The Seattle Aquarium seeks a Coast Salish artist or artist team to create a permanent public art installation for the entry of the Ocean Pavilion, slated to open in 2024. Artwork will be integrated into a sculptural “liner” or “soffit” that extends from the outside through the inside of the building. The new Ocean Pavilion will welcome visitors from around the world — acknowledging its location on traditional Coast Salish lands and waters, while also honoring the animals residing inside, and the Coral Triangle communities they represent. The Seattle Aquarium embraces the vital role of global Indigenous solidarity, knowledge-sharing, and cultural exchange in protecting our shared ocean.

The Aquarium team will save and continue to consider all submitted applications as part of an informal roster for other art opportunities on site, with the intention of
deepening relationships with Indigenous artists into the future. Coast Salish artists
working in any medium, regardless of previous public art experience, are encouraged to apply. A Native arts liaison will work with selected artists, and additional support will be provided throughout the concept development and artwork creation process.
