UW Capillaries seeks Submissions for Autumn 2020 Issue

We hope you all are doing well during this unprecedented difficult time. It is understandable to feel overwhelmed with trepidation, grief, loneliness, exhaustion, and more common, the muted desperation of having all sense of normalcy evaporate. We at Capillaries: The Journal of Narrative Medicine believe that writing and art have real power now more than ever, to help us unpack our thoughts. Thus, we offer our journal to you as a space to decompress and reflect on personal, community, national, and global issues.

Capillaries is a student-run project at the University of Washington. Since February 2018, our mission has been to provide the UW community (students, staff, and faculty) with the opportunity to reflect on experiences with medicine, healing, illness, and/or grief through prose, poetry, and artwork. Furthermore, Capillaries aims to support students and the community in their healthcare journeys and to promote greater understanding between the sciences and the humanities.

In our Autumn 2020 issue, we want to encourage diverse perspectives and ideas –reflections on being a student during this time and on how this pandemic exposes the resilience, strength, and compassion of our society but also its flaws (e.g. discrimination/microaggressions, profiteering, inequities in access to healthcare resources and educational resources, etc).

Feel free to write and create art about experiences and topics other than the COVID situation as well –we simply hope that this journal brings you some solace and space for meditation.
