Volunteer Opportunity – The Opportunity Tree Creative Arts Program

The Opportunity Tree

The Opportunity Tree is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with locations in Phoenix, Casa Grande and Maricopa, that provides services for adults and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Our mission is to provide individualized support to the people we serve, who we call our members, so that they can be independent, happy and healthy.

Creative Arts Program

The Creative Arts Program is a very unique program at The Opportunity Tree because you won’t find one like it anywhere else! We offer creative art activities for our members that foster skill development for jobs, for communication, for daily living and for emotional health.

Partnerships with Colleges

The Opportunity Tree is looking for college students who desire a unique challenge as an Intern to teach our members’ skills in the Arts, Music, and Theatre. These programs are not just an activity—it’s a transformative process that can help adults and youth with disabilities learn to be more independent in Body, Mind and Soul.

  1. The Opportunity Tree is open to any and all artistic opportunities.  Visual (painting, ceramics, photography, mixed media, computer arts, etc.), music, dance, theater, poetry, storytelling, creative writing.
  1. The commitment can be tailored to the needs/wants/desires/requirements of the student/intern.  This can range from one-offs (not preferred due to the logistics and work required to make it happen) to semester long or yearlong opportunities.  The main ask is that once a student/intern commits to whatever schedule is agreed upon, they stick to it – to the best of their ability.
  2. All workshops will be virtual, most likely through 2021-2022.
  3. The student/intern does not need any specialized training to work with the Members at this time.  No interns will be alone with Members (or in the same place for that matter), and there will always be trained The Opportunity Tree staff on-site supervising the classes and assisting the Members during the workshops.  If the intern expresses an interest in learning more about the population, there may be opportunities for more in-depth training/education on the population and best practices.
