About Art & the Unitarian Universalist Church
Art is an essential aspect of Unitarian Universalist life, a meaningful expression of the human and spiritual journey. The University Unitarian Church (UUC) has a long-standing tradition of bringing art to its members, and of supporting local artists in the larger community, from Mark Tobey and William Cumming in the 1960s, to Bonnie Hopper and the United States Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Association in 2024. UUC has an active Art Committee that works to assure that visual arts remain an integral component in the life of the church, and seeks out both emerging and established local artists to offer direct experiences of the transcendent mystery and wonder of human creativity and expression. In alignment with its values, UUC seeks artists and artistic themes from the broadest possible range of lived experiences.
About the Venue
The award-winning University Unitarian Church was designed and built by architect Paul Hayden Kirk in 1959. The recently updated chapel has a soaring, two-slope ceiling with exposed beams, touches of warm wood, and a series of large, bright bays along one wall. With minimal religious iconography, a built-in hanging system and dedicated lights, the chapel is an outstanding gallery for 2-D artwork.
We welcome you to submit your art for consideration. If selected, your art will hang in this magnificent space for several weeks and be celebrated through a reception, Sunday service viewing, and additional viewing times. Your work and artist information will also be featured in a virtual Exhibit Book.
Transform | ation
Transformation can occur in the blink of an eye or over a generation. There’s a before and after, and somewhere in the progression of time, alteration. The Transformative can bring discomfort or delight. It can trigger contemplation, discovery, new ways of being and engaging with the world. Not always subject to rationality, the transformative experience can lead to more questions than it answers, give rise to strong feelings and new perspectives, and inspire creativity. Share what Transformation and the Transformative experience looks like to you.
