Job Title: Student Warehouse Assistant
UW Surplus has a student staff position open to matriculating UW students only. MUST BE CURRENT UW STUDENT. We are looking for a friendly, hardworking student to assist in the UW Surplus Store. We will provide training on pricing Surplus inventory & Surplus procedures. 
General Description:
Under the direction of the Program Support Supervisor and Program Coordinator, assist the Surplus Property retail store operations and activities.
About Us:
Surplus takes unneeded items from all UW departments and two research hospitals. Our objective is to reuse, repurpose, or recycle as many items as possible to lessen the University’s climate impact on both purchasing and disposal. Items are resold through a retail store, online storefront, and live & online auctions. We are proud to call ourselves the UW’s weekly garage sale. Trust us, we are the best garage sale you’ve ever been to.
The Surplus Store is a warehouse space across from U-Village. You never know what you’ll find and every day here is a little different.
About You:
You pride yourself on your attention to detail and ability to learn tasks quickly. You also know how to balance getting work done correctly with the need for efficiency. You like to stay busy and enjoy organizing things. You value working in a diverse workplace. You like to get your hands dirty and moving around at work. You can lift up to 25 pounds unassisted and 50-100+ pounds with assistance. You are willing to follow all COVID-19 safety procedures, as determined by UW.
Warehouse, retail, farm, fast food, construction or circus experience is a plus.
Schedule & Pay
Pay begins at $17.50/hr. with the possibility for merit raises. You can work up to 19.5 hours a week during regular school year, with possibility for more hours during summer. We are willing to work around your class schedule. Please be prepared to work a minimum of 10 hours/week during the school year.
Various shifts available during these hours: M-F 8:00-4:00. Must be free to work Auction Saturdays (only 2 Saturdays/year). Note: Shifts are during the weekday, weekend and evening shifts are not available. Be prepared to work a minimum of 10 hours/week during the school year.
General job responsibilities include:
  • Receive, sort, and price incoming inventory.
  • Place inventory on the sales floor.
  • Collect customer purchases. Assist customers with loading & unloading vehicles
  • Follow established procedures to maintain visual and safety standards in Surplus Store and Warehouse.
  • Clean and organize work, warehouse, and retail spaces.
  • Photograph inventory and post to online selling platform.
  • Advise the campus community, governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and the general public on Surplus Store hours and procedures.
  • Process and handle retail sales to departments, non-profits, government agencies, and the general public. Complete sections of cash report as required.
  • Work with the assistance of the Surplus Program Coordinator and Supervisor to research and appraise unique items.
  • Answer phones and light filing.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
