Rebecca Barone is this year’s recipient of the Wylie Burke Endowed Scholarship!

The Department of Bioethics and Humanities is pleased to announce Rebecca Barone, double majoring in Political Science Honors and Law, Society, and Justice, and minoring in Bioethics as this year’s recipient of the Wylie Burke Endowed Scholarship! The purpose of this endowed scholarship is to support University of Washington undergraduate and graduate students studying the social, ethical, and policy implications of health research and/or healthcare.

Rebecca is pursuing an educational and career pathway to change health policy, especially as it relates to reproductive care and disability rights. She asserts that because of the systemic racism and ableism so deeply embedded into our political and healthcare system, it’s important to understand the full consequences that these policies have, intentionally and unintentionally, on different demographics. She further sees that these policies affect people of color, disabled communities, and lower socioeconomic status in a more negative way than their affluent, white, abled counterparts.

We are excited to see how this scholarship will support Rebecca’s pursuit of understanding and changing health policy to benefit all people.
