What is Data Science?

ZOOM LINK

To understand why data science is so essential, consider a student collecting fMRI data. She might generate more data in a single scanning session than a student from a previous decade generated over the course of an entire Ph.D. The ability to wrangle large data is becoming an increasingly important part of the scientific toolset. In this drop-in Zoom session Ariel and Noah will chat about what data science is, how they became data scientists and how students interested in data science can incorporate training into their PhDs, including the opportunity at UW to obtain either the Data Science Option (DSO) or the Advanced Data Science Option (ADSO) minor.

Noah Benson is a senior data scientist at the eScience Institute. He works primarily in the domain of human neuroscience and vision with an emphasis on understanding the relationship between the anatomical structure of the brain and its function.
Ariel Rokem is a Research Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology and a Senior Data Science Fellow at the eScience Institute. His group develops computational tools to study the biological basis of brain function and applies them to a variety of research questions.
