Finalizing Your Enrollment

Welcome to the Computational Finance and Risk Management program within the Department of Applied Mathematics!  Now that you are admitted, you will see some necessary enrollment steps indicated on your applicant portal.  Regarding transcripts, they may take a few weeks to arrive via mail (if you choose that option) and then the Graduate School may need another few weeks to verify them.  So, that entire process may take a while, even if sent electronically.  You can check your application status page to track progress.  If you are still completing a degree, you should wait to send that transcript until your degree has been conferred.  Note that UW alumni do not need to submit a UW transcript.  As for immunization records, follow the instructions on the site, but note that you may not be able to register in future quarters until you have cleared this hold.

You will want to set up your UW email.  Instructions can be found on UW IT’s website, but if you run into issues you can contact UW IT for help. Their contact info is at the bottom of the linked page.

Funding

The department is unfortunately not offering financial support in the form of funded appointments (TA/RA, etc.) We encourage you to check out these resources:

English Proficiency

If English is your first language, this requirement does not apply to you. If you are interested in a TA or hourly position on campus, you must also be “cleared to teach” which means demonstrate a certain level of English proficiency. This level goes above what was required to be admitted to the university. Information on how to be cleared to teach can be found here. Departments are unable to make exceptions. Also, if you will be unable to clear yourself in time for autumn quarter, you do have the option of enrolling in an English proficiency class, ENGL 105, your first quarter. Space is limited in this course, so you would want to register at the first opportunity. Thus, it is ideal if you clear this requirement before autumn.

Housing

Students often live off campus, but there are options for on-campus housing.  There is a University of Washington Housing Facebook Group, which is a forum for current and future UW students to post available housing and discuss housing issues. Importantly, beware of housing scams; you may wish to read this housing resources guide which addresses scams.

International Students

  • We highly recommend reviewing the UW Graduate School resources for admitted international students. Please email uwgrad@uw.edu with any remaining questions you may have related to your student visa.
  • Please review the process for requesting your I-20 here.
  • For students studying on an F-1 or J-1 visa, there is an International Student Services Orientation (ISS) that has to be completed prior to registration. (You may want to take care of it ahead of your registration date to save time.)
  • Plan to attend an International Graduate Student Welcome session, presented by the Center for International Relations & Cultural Leadership Exchange (CIRCLE). Autumn 2025 dates are TBD. Please visit the website for more details. While we will email all students about required events, this is highlighted here since the event starts earlier than others.
  • The CIRCLE website also has a number of resources for international students, including information about living in Seattle and being a student at UW.

  • A full course-load is 3 or more classes, ranging from approx. 10-12 credits in total.
  • Classes above are recommended based on your program, but you can opt for alternatives, just remember to check degree requirements.
  • Course descriptions can be found here.
  • One of CFRM 506 and 507 is required, but if both are taken one can count as an elective toward the degree.
  • Electives should be numerically graded, mathematically relevant, 3+ credits and, at the grad (5xx) level. If they are outside of the CFRM department, please check with ctexeira@uw.edu for elective approval.
  • Add/drop deadlines may be found on the academic calendar. You should always refer to the calendar to avoid add/drop fees or missing the opportunity to adjust without some penalty.
  • Some classes fill quickly so do try to register at the first opportunity

Orientation

1) All students should plan to attend the required MS Orientation which will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. Details and a final schedule will be posted here when available. We will talk about degree requirements and expectations, and have a session with current students.

2) Students have the option of attending the TA Program through Center for Teaching & Learning’s (CTL) training opportunities to help prepare graduate students as teaching assistants. You do not need to sign up for the academic credit referenced on the site.  Registration for CTL events will be available mid-June.
