site type Urban
project name Stormwater run-off pollution control
location Boulder, Colorado
year 2002
client City of Boulder
designers/researchers City of Boulder
the problem
Urban stormwater runoff
was found to contain chemical contaminants from soil, sediments, groundwater,
and surface water.
the solution
Trees are the solution. Phytoremediation
research has found that poplars, cottonwoods and poplar hybrids (genus
Populus) are adept at removing urban pollutants. Boulder has written
a manual for how to treat many urban stormwater runoff problems by
designing islands to catch runoff from surrounding impervious surfaces.
