Because every construction project is unique
in scope, scale and objective, it is difficult to issue universal
strategies regarding siting and construction issues of amending
soils. In many cases it is much more difficult if not impossible
(if the ground is frozen) to amend soils during the winter or rainy
season. It can also be difficult to obtain permits for large scale
projects involving clearing and grading in the winter due to erosion
control issues.
.
Generally it is preferable to execute soil amendment projects in the summer when the risk of erosion due to precipitation is minimal. It is also easier to amend soils that aren’t saturated as various materials blend easier in dry soil conditions. It is preferable to bring amendments and mulches on site as they are needed so that on-site staging of materials is not required. If on-site storage of materials is necessary, it is important to find an accessible location to stage amendments and mulches where the piles can be covered or tarped and erosion of them can be controlled. It is also helpful if the materials can be stored on a compacted level surface to make easier for equipment to scoop and manipulate the materials.
