Alternatives for treating
parking lot runoff is a necessary design goal in view of the increased
rates of development of recent years. The idea has become more widely
accepted with the more widespread use of such systems as stormwater
treatment wetlands. However, treatment systems that are both internally
contained and aesthetically pleasing are fairly new. Constructing
central plant islands in parking lots that also mitigate pollution
from cars is an idea whose time has come. This paper outlines the
practical reasons for considering such a system, some of which are
cost benefits, conservation of space, and aesthetics. However, it
is the philosophical statement and educational opportunity that
such systems represent that may be the most compelling reason. There
is a strong ecological statement made by taking the waste created
in any given area, and showing the users of that space that it is
being treated immediately and within the contributing space. It
demonstrates a commitment not to displace problems onto the surrounding
environment, and it does so in a way that is responsible and beneficial
for all stakeholders.
