At the new library stormwater
will be stored for irrigation. Bicycling will be encouraged with the
installation of covered, secure bike storage, as well as showers and
lockers for the staff. It's location downtown will have convenient
access to public transportation and there will be alternative fueling
stations for electric vehicles in the parking garage. 75% of the materials
from the demolition of the old library and from the construction from
the new will be salvaged or recycled.
The Jean
Vollum Natural Capital Center is a project in Portland, Oregon that
has been recently completed. It has been awarded with the LEED gold
standard for its' ability to meet LEED criteria. It is the first historic
building renovation to have accomplished this. More than 98% of the
building materials have been estimated to have been salvaged and recycled.
The building has a green roof that along with the surrounding landscape,
which includes bioswales, absorbs and recycles almost all the runoff
created by building. There are low flow fixtures that contribute to
water savings and efficient windows and electrical fixtures that contribute
to energy savings. The building's location is easily accessible by
public transportation, foot, and bicycle.
