(Spring Quarter 2003)

"The Walled City: A Writing Studio in Rome"

For one month, this 13-credit course will direct students to explore, in daily writing assignments, the literary signs and symbols of ancient and modern Rome, Italian art, architecture, language, and religion. Besides touring and writing about major Roman sites, students will also travel to Naples, Pompeii, and the walled hill towns of Assisi and Tarquinia. Some of the texts to be used will be "Etruscan Places," by D.H. Lawrence, and "A Literary Companion to Rome" by John Varriano. Field trips will include visits to all the major sites, galleries, museums, and lesser-known attractions in Rome, as well as trips outside of the city.

The Honors Program worked with the Program for Educational Transformation Through Technology (PETTT) to integrate technology into this study abroad program. PETTT designed many of the writing templates used on this site to meet the specific needs of the Rome program.
