Research Priorities in Stimulant-Associated
Cardiopulmonary Disease Conference

Co-Sponsored by: UW School of Medicine Division of Cardiology & OHSU School of Medicine Division of Pulmonary Medicine

Saturday August 8, 2026

Seattle, Washington

Orin Smith Auditorium, 850 Republican Street Seattle, WA 98109

Methamphetamine and other stimulant use in the US has surged in recent years and is associated with a substantial burden of heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. This interdisciplinary conference will bring together cardiovascular, pulmonary, and addiction medicine specialists to define research priorities in epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and care models for cardiopulmonary complications of stimulant use. It will spur much needed inter-institutional collaboration between junior and senior investigators from across the US.

This conference will be the first of its kind to focus exclusively on the cardiopulmonary effects of stimulant use aiming to:

  1. Enhance multidisciplinary and cross-institutional collaboration by convening national thought-leaders in addiction medicine, cardiology, and pulmonary vascular disease.
  2. Disseminate novel scholarship and care models in stimulant-associated cardiopulmonary disease including community-based participatory research, peer engagement, and community-based care.
  3. Promote trainee and junior investigator scholarship to foster mentorship and support for early career scholars in this field

Three plenary talks on MAHF, MA-PAH, and addiction medicine will be complemented by a panel discussion on innovative community-engaged approaches to care and breakout sessions to define research priorities in the field.

Abstracts

A poster session will be held to help the next generation of researchers connect with experts. Trainees, junior and senior faculty are encouraged to present work in the format of a poster that will be displayed in the lobby of the conference center. If you are interested in presenting a poster, please submit your abstract below.

We ask that all presentations and posters use person-first, non-stigmatizing language when discussing substance use and related conditions, consistent with the National Institute on Drug Abuse “Words Matter” guidance. Because language can reinforce stigma and influence patient experiences of care, we aim to foster respectful communication. Presenters are encouraged to review this brief resource in advance.

Readability of Posters
Keep in mind that large audiences view the poster sessions. To accommodate a group at a single poster presentation, the size of the lettering (type) must be large enough to be legible from approximately 6 feet (1.8 meters) away.

The key to good readability is to choose contrasting colors and shades. Simple use of color can add emphasis effectively. The six best color combinations are:

  • Black on white
  • Red on white
  • Green on white
  • Blue on white
  • White on blue (no diazo)
  • White on black

Choose a typeface that is simple and clear. The weight of the type chosen (the thickness of each letter) should be medium or bold. The actual size of the type is measured in points. Below are examples of recommended point sizes for legible viewing from various distances.

REMINDER! Please include all authors’ disclosure information in your poster. Please ensure that it is visible to attendees viewing the poster
