Discussion of Lab Name:
- Focus of the lab has shifted over time, and UW is helping to define data science for the US
- Important to change perception of what data science is
- How to change what data science is about to emphasize the importance of human centeredness to the data science world
- A lot of what we do could be described as human centered data science: dealing with people that work with large amounts of data, how oceanographers work with data, what are tools scientists are using for data, ethnography of data science, visualization of large and complex data, how humans understand large data sets, & text visualization project
- Not just doing data science in a human centered way, also going a bit meta and including other areas including ethnography
- (Katie) Importance of actually doing some data science with charts because people will expect this
- (Daniel) Playing up the words in name as opposed to acronym?
- Why not Human Data Interaction? Might think data gathered about humans, and not uniquely us
- Not HDS Lab? Put hyphen in Human-centered?
- Yes to hyphenating human-centered
